NEB Systemic Narratives

NEB Systemic Narratives is a podcast emerging from the New European Bauhaus and the collective work of mapping and synthesising what NEB Lighthouse demonstrators across Europe have been creating, testing and learning. The Lighthouse projects are not only delivering outputs, they are rehearsing new ways of collaborating across sectors and disciplines, rooted in place and often carried through culture and the arts, while staying close to people and the living world. This podcast captures that practice and turns it into a narrative resource for others.

We explore systemic transformation as something you do, not something you announce. Drawing on interviews, conversations and workshops with people working inside NEB projects across Europe, we surface six practical enablers that repeatedly make change possible: Listening, Trusting, Imagining, Holding Space, Sharing Language, and Making Time. Each episode translates lived experience into insights that are legible, transferable, and still faithful to the realities of place-based change.

The podcast is produced by the team behind the NEB Systemic Narratives project. Producers: Katarina Pietrzak and Sandra Löv (Sweden), commissioned by EIT Culture & Creativity.

A voice collage on Holding space, drawn from NEB Lighthouse fieldwork across Europe. You will hear how holding space shows up as both structure and courage, slowing down to build relational foundations, creating places and rhythms people can return to, and staying with tension long enough for deeper understanding to form. The collage also holds the delicacy of facilitation choices, how power and hierarchy can be gently disrupted, and why early ideas are fragile in tired institutions, needing a robust enough space to survive long enough to become real.

A voice collage on Making time, drawn from NEB Lighthouse fieldwork across Europe. You will hear the lived pressure of milestones and deliverables, the hard lesson that relationships cannot be fast-tracked, and the strategies teams use to align pace with purpose, from waiting for the right moment to securing longer horizons beyond initial grants. The collage also names the cost of not making time, empty living labs, fragile trust, demonstrators that look good but are not used, and asks what changes when time becomes a material we actively work with, rather than an obstacle we race against.

A voice collage on Sharing languages, drawn from NEB Lighthouse fieldwork across Europe. You will hear how one expression can build momentum or break trust, how new vocabularies emerge through artistic and visual practices, and how “pluriversality” can be held without forcing a single definition. The collage also holds the shadow side, where transparency without shared meaning can become harmful, and where staying with refusal, fuzziness and silence reveals what truly matters, before deciding what to do next.

Holding space is one of the most demanding enablers of transformation, the work of creating a container strong enough to hold uncertainty, disagreement, fear and unfinishedness, without the project framework cracking under pressure. In this narrated reflection, we explore holding space as relational architecture, built through time, attention and care, rather than plans and deliverables. Through NEB project stories, we follow what happens when a consortium learns “relationship before tasks” the hard way, when a long-term neighbourhood hub becomes a physical anchor for trust, and when temporary structures in youth work turn into something people can see, touch and claim as their own.

Making time is an enabler of transformation that confronts the tension between the clock and the living process. In this narrated reflection, we explore what it takes to move at the pace that relationships, trust, and shared understanding actually require, inside systems built for quick wins and fixed reporting cycles. Through NEB project stories, we follow what shifts when assessment adapts to real pilots rather than deadlines, when a “speedboat” project meets a “container ship” administration, when a consortium learns to slow down to build foundations, and when neighbourhood teams balance long-term work with small, tangible actions that build trust through evidence.

Sharing languages is an enabler of transformation that appears in quiet, decisive moments across NEB projects, when the words in our documents no longer match the language of people’s lives. In this narrated reflection, we explore how misunderstandings can become signals rather than failures, and how shared language is built across multiple layers, from “project English” and EU jargon to municipal, cultural, research and everyday neighbourhood worlds. Through stories of living dictionaries, reworking terms that threaten trust, and visual sensemaking methods like rich pictures, we show how language becomes infrastructure for acting together without flattening what different meanings need to hold.

A voice collage on Imagining, drawn from NEB Lighthouse fieldwork across Europe. You will hear moments where imagination breaks the grip of fear, reframes problems, and turns “unthinkable” ideas into shared practice, through artful methods, embodied empathy, and concrete acts of making. The collage also holds the tensions, where institutional time and KPIs collide with non-linear creative processes, and asks what kind of safety and care is needed for imagination to become a genuine driver of change rather than decoration.

Imagining is an enabler of transformation, not as fantasy, but as world-making grounded in real conditions. In this narrated reflection, we explore how imagination reshapes what people can perceive, feel, and act upon, from stepping into the life of an unwanted blue crab in the Venice lagoon, to young people building their own pavilion and changing a city’s story about youth. We also follow how reimagining language can protect trust in neighbourhood work, and how governance itself can be redesigned to give the more-than-human world a formal voice.

A voice collage on Trusting, drawn from fieldwork across NEB projects in Europe. You will hear what trust looks like when it is missing, and what helps it grow, from structural commitments and local champions to everyday relational practices that make cooperation possible under pressure. The collage also holds the tensions, where “trust-building” risks becoming a tactic for efficiency or extraction, and asks what it means to treat trust as shared infrastructure, before anything else can be built.

Trusting is an enabler of transformation that shows up across NEB Lighthouse experiences as a concrete practice, not a soft sentiment. In this narrated reflection, we explore how trust can be designed into collaboration when partners do not usually work together, and when communities carry histories of being let down. Through project stories, we follow what shifts when relationships are built before tasks, when commitment and shared power become visible, and when small choices of format, space, and facilitation make it safer to speak honestly.
