In this narrated reflection, we explore holding space as relational architecture, built through time, attention and care, rather than plans and deliverables. Through NEB project stories, we follow what happens when a consortium learns “relationship before tasks” the hard way, when a long-term neighbourhood hub becomes a physical anchor for trust, and when temporary structures in youth work turn into something people can see, touch and claim as their own.

Making time is an enabler of transformation that confronts the tension between the clock and the living process. In this narrated reflection, we explore what it takes to move at the pace that relationships, trust, and shared understanding actually require, inside systems built for quick wins and fixed reporting cycles. Through NEB project stories, we follow what shifts when assessment adapts to real pilots rather than deadlines, when a “speedboat” project meets a “container ship” administration, when a consortium learns to slow down to build foundations, and when neighbourhood teams balance long-term work with small, tangible actions that build trust through evidence.

Enabler 4: A Guide to Sharing Languages

Sharing languages is an enabler of transformation that appears in quiet, decisive moments across NEB projects, when the words in our documents no longer match the language of people’s lives. In this narrated reflection, we explore how misunderstandings can become signals rather than failures, and how shared language is built across multiple layers, from “project English” and EU jargon to municipal, cultural, research and everyday neighbourhood worlds. Through stories of living dictionaries, reworking terms that threaten trust, and visual sensemaking methods like rich pictures, we show how language becomes infrastructure for acting together without flattening what different meanings need to hold.

Imagining is an enabler of transformation, not as fantasy, but as world-making grounded in real conditions. In this narrated reflection, we explore how imagination reshapes what people can perceive, feel, and act upon, from stepping into the life of an unwanted blue crab in the Venice lagoon, to young people building their own pavilion and changing a city’s story about youth. We also follow how reimagining language can protect trust in neighbourhood work, and how governance itself can be redesigned to give the more-than-human world a formal voice.
